Petchaburi/Hua Hin - Thailand
Hi all
Petchaburi
Well Petchaburi turned out to be a diamond in the rough. Probably was a brave choice for our first step outside of Bangkok, I think we must have been the only westerners the town had ever seen, and the Thai phrase book was well used by the end of three days.
We had a moment on the first night, hot, tired and hungry, Brannan was reduced to tears when the best thing we could find for dinner was a dodgey looking food stall that had whole, cooked and crumbed baby birds. Then the kids were spooked by a group of about 20 wild monkeys sat on the footpath watching our every move... was thinking the rabies shots might have been a good idea after all :-)
We discovered, by chance, a spectacular temple which housed three enormous golden buddahs. Its nice to see the kids dumbstruck with awe too - I was worried we would have to bind and gag Petra in places like that so we could be respectful of those there praying.
Hua Hin
We're now in Hua Hin only about 250 kms from Bangkok, so we haven't made it far geographically - but felt like we needed somewhere to just stay put for a few days. We took a local bus from Petchaburi, which luckily had fans and windows which opened right up. Its quite a touristy place, and maybe its not in the true spirit of travelling... but it is nice to be able to use English again.
We spent two nights in a very budget guest house near the waterfront, and then Mr-fast-approaching-40 went in search of something more comfortable. So now we're in a nearly new 'hotel' approx 1 km from the beach - but right beside the night market. And although we're having to take two rooms (there's only enough space for two in each) its still only $50 NZD per night for the both.
Yesterday we blew an entire day's budget by going to an Elephant farm. We took a one hour 'trek' on two elephants - think mine and Petra's had sinus problems it kept snorting and splattering us with 'something wet'...... Anyhow, now we can cross that off the to-do-list.
Plan is to spend another two nights here, and then head off to Koh Samui - we're just researching travel options at the moment.
That's all for now - take care everyone :-)
